Built in the early 1700's the bishops table hotel is a fine example of early Georgian architecture with its distinctive frontage, and original windows and shutters, all in perfect working order. It is set in a prominent position next to the library in West Street, one of the finest Georgian Streets in Surrey.
The building was once the home of The Marquis of Lothian who purchased it in 1808. He constructed and regularly used a pathway leading down through the beautiful two acre garden leading to the impressive St Andrew's Parish Church (the largest Parish Church in Surrey). The present owners have plans to further landscape this area. The Marquis is also reputed to have formed the first ladies cricket team in Farnham!
The hotel was used until 1919 for the education of Anglican Clergy.
The famous sculptress Sheila Mitchell lived here in rooms on the top floor during the twentieth century.

The Bishops Table’s Future is Nearly Here!
If you are a regular visitor to the hotel you will be aware that we have been planning for a number of years to carry out improvements and development here at the Bishops Table Hotel. Our objective is to offer an outstanding quality boutique hotel and restaurant environment for all our guests and visitors that will match with this beautiful market town.
We have spent considerable time listening to the local community, conservation specialists, and local planners to make sure that our plans not only fulfil our guest’s needs, but also those of our town and neighbours. Having listened to all feedback and discussing further with Waverley planners, we are delighted to announce that at the end of November 2011, we submitted an updated planning application to Waverley Borough Council. We strongly believe this revised plan will offer the best all round solution for a strong and secure future here at the hotel.
Working with niche specialist conservation minded property developers ‘Friday Street’ of Odiham, we have submitted an application that would, if planning was granted, allow for:
- A fully refurbished and extended boutique hotel offering 18 quality bedrooms and en suite bathrooms, including disabled access accommodation.
- An extended Bistro 27 Restaurant and Kitchen offering a wonderful dining experience overlooking our south facing gardens.
- A newly landscaped lawned area and patio on which to enjoy those lunchtime or evening drinks.
- A ‘secret’ landscaped area of approximately one acre to the south of the hotel, through which one can walk to St Andrew’s Church and Downing Street away from the traffic.
- A much needed car parking area for the hotel to help take guests cars away from local streets.
- A newly refurbished Coach House with rooms above.
- A small secluded, private development of character homes in the grounds with parking.
MBP Architects of Richmond, Surrey have designed this proposed unique scheme, which considerably enhances the existing Grade 2 listed building.
